Maroubra Off Market Property
Maroubra is located just 10kms from the Sydney CBD and is a popular beachside suburb for property investors and home owners.
History
The name Maroubra is an aboriginal word meaning ‘place of thunder’.
The first home was built in Maroubra in 1861, but the area didn’t really make headlines until 1898 when a fully rigged iron ship weighing approximately 1500 tonnes was caught in gale force winds and shipwrecked at the northern end of Maroubra. The shipwreck remained on the beach for a number of years but could not be re-floated. Hereward Street, Maroubra is named after this historical event.
The property rush didn’t really happen in the area until 1910 when a prominent real estate developer by the name of Herbert dudley subdivided the land into residential blocks and helped drive the way for the tramline which was extended to Maroubra Beach in 1921.
The Region
Maroubra is divided into three main regions….the Maroubra Junction, Maroubra Beach, and South Maroubra.
Transport
Maroubra has a great transport system in place, with Buses, replacing the original trams that closed in 1961, and there is also a push for a Light rail which will hopefully one day extend to Maroubra.
Celebrity Residents
A number of notable celebrities live at Maroubra, including popular singer Guy Sebastian, former premier Bob Carr, Cricketer David warner, and TV personality Mike Whitney.
