Bondi Off Market Property
Located just 7 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, is the iconic Bondi Beach
History Who would have thought that you could have once bought the majority of the Bondi region for 200 pounds, literally costing just 1 pound per acre back in 1851. This includes most of the beach frontage which was originally named Bondi estate. The area was renamed O’Brien Estate, and the beach and surrounding land were available to the public as a picnic ground. However as the popularity of the beach area grew, the Government intervened and in 1882 Bondi Beach officially became a public beach. The original indigenous name of the area was boondi, meaning water breaking over rocks, and while it has been misspelt many times over the early years, it was settled upon as Bondi in 1827. Apart from the beach, Bondi’s main attractions have long been the shopping centre at Bondi Junction, and you’ll notice the varied building styles through both the shopping and housing with a mix of Victorian period, Federation and contemporary clearing marking the ages of the area. In 1884 the steam tramway opened to Bondi, and then with electric services some 20 years later, making Bondi a popular location for the city dwellers to enjoy their summers at the beach, which a century on has made Bondi Australia’s most iconic beach. In fact Sydney beach goers could easily jump on the tram line which ran between Bondi Beach and Coogee, until 1954, when the line was closed down to make way for the bus line. Fun Facts Bondi Beach made the Guinness Book of Records in 2007 for the largest swimsuit photoshoot, which featured 1010 women in bikinis. One of the first iMac computers colour was Bondi Blue, named after the waters of the iconic beach. Popular Bondi Attractions Thanks to the popular television show Bondi Rescue, Bondi’s life guards and the beach itself have become a global attraction. In fact Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club claims to be the world’s first surf lifesaving club, so it’s only natural that a television show should feature this beach. The Bondi Icebergs is also one of Australia’s most iconic attractions, dating back to 1929, and formed after a number of local lifesavers wished to train during the cold winter months to keep up their fitness and skills, so they formed a club. Today the Bondi Baths are managed by the Icebergs. Bondi the TV star. Bondi Beach has been the star of many popular television shows that are watched all around the globe.
